Why add a listing?
The Rural Illinois Medical Student Assistance Program (RIMSAP) is a jointly sponsored initiative by the Illinois State
Medical Society (ISMS) and the Illinois Agricultural Association (IAA). RIMSAP was created in 1948 by the Illinois
General Assembly with the goal of encouraging medical students into practicing family medicine in medically
underserved areas. The program was developed out of a partnership between the ISMS and the IAA. Since its
inception, there have been over 600 physicians from the program who have established practice in rural Illinois.
For further information on RIMSAP, click here.
Now in our 60th year, we have expanded RIMSAP by creating this web site, which serves as an open dialogue between
the communitites of downstate Illinois and future physicians. This site allows communities, groups and physician
residents to share information on practice opportunities with future physicians. We are asking for your help in
making this web site a successful and useful tool.
With this web site, we are creating an information center of medical practice opportunities for new physicians
entering the field of family practice, internal medicine, 2+2, pediatrics, or obstetrician-gynocology.
This site will serve as a central resource for medical students seeking employment opportunities in medically
underserved communities throughout Illinois. In order for this site to be successful, we need information from
organizations and towns in rural Illinois interested in helping a physician to establish a medical practice.
Who can add listings?
If your community is looking for a physician to practice in your area and you meet the guidelines listed below,
you may continue to the following pages. There you will fill out the forms that will allow us to add your
information to this web site. Your information and assistance is important to us in helping Illinois communities
gain medical attention.
Guidelines:
- Must be in rural Illinois
- Community must have a population less than 20,000
- Opportunities that need only the following primary physician will be listed: family practice, internal
medicine, 2+2, pediatrics or Ob/Gyn.
What will happen after I add a listing?
Your listing will not be available for viewing until it has been approved by the RIMSAP manager. Once you finish
filling out the forms, the RIMSAP manager will be notified that your listing is awaiting approval. He will check
to make sure that you meet all of the guidelines and check for any missing or unclear information. If your listing
meets with his approval, it will be made active immediately. Either way, you will be contacted by e-mail and
informed of the status of your listing.
